Former Wingspan editor named
Sports Writer of the Year

The Cullman Times Sports Editor Rob Ketcham has been awarded Sports Writer of the Year for small dailies by Community Newspaper Holdings Inc.

The prestigious award given each year by The Times’ Montgomery-based parent company, is based on the quality and consistency of work produced by individual sports writers in CNHI’s vast network of newspapers across the country. Ketcham’s award was one of the Best of CNHI 2014 editorial contest winners announced Monday.

Ketcham has led The Times’ print and digital sports coverage for four years since arriving in Alabama after graduating from the University of Wyoming. He was sports editor at Laramie County Community College's Wingspan where he won numerous awards.

“Since his arrival at The Times, Rob has immersed himself in community journalism, engaging in a wide range of sports coverage and interacting with players, coaches and readers,” Editor David Palmer said.

“Recognition from his peers across CNHI is an extraordinary honor we believe is well deserved.”

According to the judges: “Ketcham writes entertaining, sometimes unorthodox stories that show a gift for language and cultural references. He’s unafraid to be creative and experiment. It’s clear that he really enjoys what he’s doing.”

Ketcham has also been recognized with writing awards by the Alabama Press Association in recent years for his sports reporting and depth of writing.
