HPR to sponsor open mic night

Laramie County Community College’s annual literary art magazine High Plains Register will sponsor an open mic night on campus as a part of National Poetry Month.

The event, which will be held at 2 p.m., Wednesday, April 30, in the Student Lounge, gives an opportunity for students to share music, poetry, book readings or their own feelings, according to HPR staff member Brandon Duggan. HPR is heavily involved in the open mic night, Duggan said. “We set it up,” he said. “It’s kind of our project.”

The event is planned for the week before finals begin. Duggan added the open mic can be a stress-reliever for students preparing for their upcoming tests.

HPR has had a hard time getting students involved in open mic in previous years, Duggan said. “Poetry has this connotation of being lovey-dovey,” Duggan said. “I think people will be surprised by how entertaining it can be.”

Priced at $5, the 2014 edition of HPR will be available August 2014. HPR accepts submissions of nonfiction, creative nonfiction, fiction, poetry as well as visual art such as paintings and photography from the Wyoming/Colorado area.
