Zone’s lone rider places fourth at Golden State

A rider sent to represent the Laramie County Community College hunt seat equestrian team placed fourth in the hunt zones finals in Stanford, Calif., April 5–6.

While in Stanford, sophomore Nicole Blankenship, the only LCCC rider sent to finals, competed in a one round, set jumping course. She was required to keep her horse in a canter, which Blankenship described as “slower than a run but faster than a jog.” Each rider had to complete the jumps in the order given.

Blankenship did not make zones last year. “I worked for two years to get there, so it is rewarding to go show in Stanford,” Blankenship said. She needed to place in the top two to earn a spot in nationals this year.

Blankenship will graduate LCCC with her equine training degree in May. Next year she will relocate to Prescott, Ariz., where she will be working with jumping horses as an intern at Happy’s Dream Ranch.
