LCCC student receives prestigious Gold Circle award

A former co-editor of Laramie County Community College’s student newspaper, Wingspan was the only two-year college student in the nation to win a prestigious Gold Circle award in a national contest sponsored by Columbia University.

Shawn Havel won a certificate of merit in the single sports photograph category for “Men’s basketball defeats EWC in overtime.” Two- and four-year institutions compete against one another in 50 digital media categories, which attracted 5,503 entries.

The 30th annual Gold Circle awards for digital media were announced by the Columbia Scholastic Press Association for the November 2, 2011–November 2, 2012, contest year. The awards were given during a ceremony at the annual CSPA national convention March 20–22, 2013, in New York City.

The other winners in that highly competitive category were Ball State University, Indiana University, University of Houston, Baylor University and University of Pennsylvania.

Wingspan faculty advisers are Rosalind Schliske and J.L. O’Brien. The CSPA has been operated as part of Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism since 1925. In addition to digital media, awards are given in newspaper, yearbook and magazine categories.
