Eagles compete for No. 1 spot

The Laramie County Community College men's basketball team, as of Feb. 1, is competing with Western Nebraska Community College for the No. 1 spot in the Region IX south subdivision after winning five games straight including its most recent 70–59 win against Eastern Wyoming in Torrington Jan. 31.

The Golden Eagles had a 32–29 lead at halftime and were led offensively by sophomores Philip Freeman and Rodrigo Silva pulled away to win by 11. Freeman finished the game with 21, points, and Silva recorded a double-double with 17 points and 16 rebounds. Julian Chiera also contributed offensively with 11 points.

The win propelled the Golden Eagles ahead of Western Nebraska Community College, who did not play Tuesday night, and the two teams will meet in a game to determine who will sit atop the south subdivision Feb. 2 in Scottsbluff, Neb. The Cougars going into the game 18–3 on a six-game win streak while LCCC is only 4–8 on the road this year but has won its last three road games.
