Basketball team loses two, wins one over break

While most students were staying warm and enjoying the winter break, the Laramie County Community College men’s basketball team was hard at work playing several games, two on the road and one at home.

The Golden Eagles struggled on the road, losing to Sheridan College by 66-78 on Jan. 5 and at Trinidad, Colo., on Jan. 12 by a score of 72-64 to Trinidad State. They did beat Otero Junior College on Jan. 9 by a score of 68-67.

LCCC’s most recent game was against Trinidad State. The Golden Eagles had trouble all night, with a 34.5 percent mark for shots from the field. They also made only three three-pointers during the game. Deshon Portley and Emory Bennett both racked up 16 points during the game, while Julian Chiera had 12.

The lone home game of the winter break saw LCCC take on Otero Junior College. The Golden Eagles rallied from a first-half deficit to tie the game late in the second half. With mere seconds left in the game, Ude Ifeanyichukwu, who signed with Southern Mississippi last semester, was given a free throw opportunity. He netted his second shot to give the Eagles the go ahead with less than 4 seconds left to play. The Golden Eagles won the game 68-67.

The first game of the break took LCCC to Sheridan College, where LCCC led going into halftime by four points. But Sheridan had a strong second half, in which they made 54 percent of their shots, compared to 35 percent from the Golden Eagles. Sheridan pulled the win out by a final score of 66-78.

The Golden Eagles are 13-5 overall and 3-2 in Region IX play. They will play their next game in Sterling, Colo., against Northeastern Junior College on Jan. 16. The Eagles’ next home game will be on Jan. 31 against Western Nebraska Community College at 7 p.m.
