Golden Eagles host home playoff game

Laramie County Community College’s basketball team (21-9, 11-5 Region IX South) hosts the Trinidad State Junior College Trojans (13-16, 7-9 Region IX South) Saturday, Feb. 28, for the first round of the Region IX tournament.

The Golden Eagles split two games with the Trojans during the regular season, winning at home Jan. 10 and losing on the road Feb. 11.

LCCC last won a postseason game in the 2010-11 season, when they beat Northeast Community College and Central Wyoming College before being eliminated by Western Wyoming Community College.

This year’s basketball teams is one of the winningest teams in the college’s history. It is the first Golden Eagles team coached under Jason Ficca to win 21 games in the regular season.

The 1986-87 team was 21-11, as was the 2012-13 team. In 2009-10, LCCC went 22-11, winning two playoff games. In March 1987, the Golden Eagles beat Northwest College in the Region IX tournament final before falling to Bismarck Junior College, the Region XIII champion. Had the Eagles won, the team would have played in the NJCAA finals in Hutchinson, Kansas.

The winner of the Feb. 28 game will advance to the next round of the Region IX tournament, being hosted by Northwest College March 5-7.
