CAB works hard to bring LCCC students together

Campus Activities Board at Laramie County Community College had a strong start this year that will just keep going as it prepares for big events in the future, one activities adviser believes.

After about three years of working in the activities department, Zeke Sorenson said the CAB crew this year has been active and diligent about involving as many students as possible.

Homcoming dance was a big hit

One big success this year was the turnout at the homecoming dance, Sorenson said. He mentioned the participation and attendance at this dance were a lot better than past years. Students filled the room until the cutoff time at 11 p.m. because of the effort the CAB students devoted to encouraging students to the dance.

Creating ways to meet other students and enjoy campus events starts with the activities office and the Campus Activities Board. “Campus Activities Board essentially runs the activities,” Sorenson said. It is the idea of “students planning activities for students,” that works the best, he added. The CAB members are student employees who set up and put together all the details of campus events.

They plan for Welcome Week, Homecoming Week and Finals Week. One time they brought in a speaker on studying skills during a Finals Week. “We really think about what are students needing at that stressful time,” Sorenson said.

Planning takes time and effort

CAB holds weekly meetings to decide who has what responsibilities to best put together the events, Sorenson said.

They have “What’s Up Wednesdays” every Wednesday from 12:15 p.m. to 1 p.m., so students can discover what is happening around campus and when the next big CAB event will be, he said. Also, the activities department arranges a campus events calendar so everyone can see what events are happening when.

Now in the age of social media, CAB utilizes Facebook as a source to post events and update the student population on what is going on. Students can check out their Facebook page to learn about what speakers they are bringing to campus, what contests they’re having, what scavenger hunt they’re hosting and more.

CAB keeps students updated on events by using Facebook

Students can find out about the events that CAB will host on its Facebook site, during “What’s Up Wednesdays” or on its bulletin board by the Emporium.
