Eagles fly way to No. 1 seed

The Laramie County Community College men’s soccer team concluded its regular season this year after it steamrolled through the games on Friday, Oct. 19, and Saturday, Oct. 20. LCCC beat Otero Junior College by a score of 3-0 and Trinidad State Junior College by a score of 6-0.

The Golden Eagles have compiled an impressive season with an 11-0-1 record in regional play and a 13-3-1 record overall.

The Golden Eagles started their weekend by taking on Otero College on Oct. 19, in which both the offense and defense were working. The defense held Otero to only one shot on goal the whole game, while LCCC’s Gleydson Neri scored two goals, and Dewey Rodgers had an assist. The victory also clinched the No. l seed in the Region IX championship.

The Golden Eagles followed their victory by racking up an impressive 6-0 victory against Trinidad State on Oct. 20. LCCC’s Rodgers scored two goals in the first half, while the second half saw an onslaught of goals from Wyatt Witty, Raul Gonzalez, Cody Smart and Gleydson Neri.

The Golden Eagles’ defense was also stellar, as only six shots were allowed on net, all of which Daniel Ainsworth stopped en route to the team’s victory. Coach Vince Gibson said the team’s impressive home stand has its roots earlier in the season.

Gibson said: “The big part was when we went to New York and Iowa and got creamed. It changed our mentality to want to win at nationals, not just go to nationals.”

Gibson also mentioned the team’s defense had come a long way, and they want shutouts every game.

LCCC will play Friday, Oct. 26, at noon against the winner of Oct. 23’s game between Western Wyoming Community College and Trinidad State. LCCC will host the regional tournament this year in which the winner will play in the district tournament.
