Warfare inspired Tony-nominated British author

Timberlake Wertenbaker is a British playwright best known for adapting novels into plays. She has done works that included pieces by Marivaux, Anouilh, Maeterlinck, Pirandello, Sophocles and Euripides.

Wertenbaker is also known for the play “Our Country’s Good” an adaption from Thomas Keneally’s novel, “The Playmaker,” which she was nominated for a Tony Award in 1988.

A graduate of St. John’s College in 1966, American-born Wertenbaker began her writing career for Time-Life books. Then she went on to teaching and lecturing in both Greek and French, before moving to London in the early 1980s, where she became interested in playwriting.

Wertenbaker has also adapted several Greek plays such as Euripides-translated play “Hecuba” in 2001. “Our Ajax” is her newest adaption for the stage.
