Rodeo athletes struggle at CNFR

Fortune did not favor the three Laramie County Community College athletes who qualified for the College National Finals Rodeo held in Casper, Wyo., June 12–18.

Sophomore bull rider Loncey Johnson and freshmen team roping duo Canler Sterkel and Dillon Evenson were all eliminated from the finals prior to reaching the short round.

Johnson, who entered the finals ranked No. 2 in the nation, could not seem to catch a break in Casper. Drawing an exceptionally unfavorable group of bulls, Johnson failed to score in three consecutive goes in the long round.

Sterkel and Evenson did not fair much better at the finals, failing to rope their steer in the first and third goes. They did register a time of 17.5 seconds in the second go. However, it was not enough to see them through to the short round.

“Sometimes it doesn’t work out,” LCCC Coach David Browder said. “They did not have the rodeo they wanted.”

Browder explained the athletes were disappointed by the outcome, but they plan to re-evaluate their goals and aim higher this season.

All three athletes returned to the college this year. Johnson will continue his pursuit of the No. 1 spot in the nation while Sterkel and Evenson aim to improve on their third-place finish in the region. All three athletes hope to return next June for the 2012 CNFR.
