Three LCCC students place in Skills USA nationals

In late June, three Laramie County Community College students competed at Skills USA Nationals in Kansas City.

This is an accomplishment for those who competed because only first- place winners from each state and several territories were eligible to attend nationals. That means about 56 people were eligible to compete in each category.

Singnificant honors for competing students

Two of the three students were finalists, placing in the Top 10. Michael Brimley placed eighth in diesel technology, while Daniel Prall placed 10th in automotive refinishing. Joey Sanchez was a competitor in the automotive technology category, placing No. 18. Each student performed hands-on tests along with written exams.

Their instructor Robert Benning said, “It’s a very significant competition that we did so well. Only three students placed in three categories.”

Passions bring accomplishments

Brimley said he chose this field because “it’s something I’ve always been good at, and it pays good money.” One of the tasks he performed during his first competition was to rebuild a transmission. In the future he hopes to continue his career as a field service mechanic, and within the next five years he would like to become a manager in his field.

Prall said, “It’s something I enjoy.” During the competition he was tasked with demonstrating his technique, color matching and taping abilities. He hopes to continue with automotive repair in the future.

Sanchez said, in regards to his field, “it’s my passion.”

During the competition he was required to use a diagnostic scanner to check an engine, demonstrate his abilities with customer service and take a 100-question quiz among other things. He too hopes to continue his current career as a freight mechanic.
