Staff sought for publication, online, broadcasting

Wingspan, a nationally recognized college student media organization at Laramie County Community College operated by a team of students with the help from two faculty advisers, is looking for students to join in the spring semester.

While Wingspan started as a newspaper in 1976, it was the first student publication in Wyoming to have a website in 1995. Recently, a cable television station became part of the Wingspan brand.

Students, who do not have to be mass media or multimedia majors to be on staff, can register for MMMM 1370 “Publications Production” or MMMM 1371 “Multimedia Production.” The three-credit-hour class meets from noon to 12:50 p.m. on Monday and Wednesday. Students may also audit the class or contribute on a volunteer basis.

The Wingspan staff consists of students from all walks of life; in fact, the more variety present among the paper’s contributors, the broader the spectrum of perspective offered in its contents.

Positions include writers, photographers, videographers, Web designers, page designers and ad sales representatives.

The newspaper staff was first housed in the College Community Center absent typewriters with nothing more than a converted closet for a darkroom. Now the streamlined multimedia lab in the Fine Arts Building is complete with laser printers, a 12-station darkroom and a newsroom.

The area includes the broadcast station, which was employed in the Nov. 5 election coverage, with plans to expand the levels of media coverage, especially to cover sports.

The staff contends yearly with several colleges from around the U.S. for national awards, most recently bringing home honors such as the National College Media Convention’s (NOLA ’13) best of show award in New Orleans.

One of the perks to staff members is traveling for professional development each semester; recent destinations include Phoenix, San Diego, Nashville, Atlanta, Santa Fe, Orlando, Denver and Hollywood.

Inquire about joining the Wingspan staff may be made in the Fine Arts Building, Room 155, by phone at 307-778-1304 and by email at
