Young rodeo team starts off strong

Laramie County Community Colleges’ women’s rodeo team earned fifth place in the first rodeo of the season in Riverton on Sept. 14–16.

The Central Wyoming College Rodeo was the opening weekend for the LCCC team, and there were many strong performances, notably from the women’s team.

Hayli Bonham placed second in breakaway roping with a combined average of 5.9 seconds and 135.0 points. Bonham was one of five women on the team to make the short go. Ashley Kroul tied for eighth in the breakaway with 3.0 time, and Lacey Carroll earned seventh in barrel racing with a total time of 36.38 seconds.

The men’s team placed 10th in the rodeo with 60 points for the weekend.

Coach David Browder said he was extremely pleased with the opening weekend. “I think we are going to have a stronger team than last year, I’m very optimistic,” Browder said. “It was a consistent performance as a whole.”

He also praised the steer wrestlers this year, saying it could very easily be one of the strong areas for the team.

Standouts during the weekend for the men included Peter Walnofer who tied for sixth in steer wrestling, marking a 14.7 second combined time. Chance Englebert also tied for ninth in bareback riding, scoring 72 points.

On Sept. 21, the team will head to Chadron State College for a weekend-long rodeo in Chadron, Neb.

Browder said he is extremely pleased with what he has seen so far and hoped to continue to move the rodeo team up the rankings as the season advances.

Oct. 12-14 LCCC will host the Shawn Dubie Memorial College Rodeo, LCCC’s only home rodeo event, at the LCCC Arena.
